Last Thursday there was a plant sale event in the university. I was planning to buy only one or two small flowers to decorate my office space.

My Little Garden

There were so many beautiful flowers, and plants, so I just could not stop with one or two.

Coffee flavored granola bars

| | Comments (0)

Did you ever try to add your favorite food or drink into every possible meal? I tried this with coffee, especially for the desserts and the snacks I baked.

Caribou Coffee Granola Bars

Like many other people, who live in America, coffee has an important place in my daily life. I don't think I am addicted to caffein, I just like the smell and the taste of the coffee. That's why I like using it as a flavor in my cookies. I especially like using Turkish coffee in my brownies, or cookies.

When I was shopping several weeks ago, I tried a new Caribou Coffee brand granola bar with coffee flavor from a granny like lady. (The ad companies know how to work. When a person sees a granny, s/he does not think twice to taste the thing she is selling most of the time. Don't you think so?).

Of course I bought a box of it, and you can imagine how happy I was that day. In the box there were vanilla-latte and chocolate-mocha flavor bars.

I really liked these bars, especially the chocolate-mocha flavor.

FDA Warning

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is issuing an alert to consumers about an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 in multiple states that may be associated with the consumption of produce. To date, preliminary epidemiological evidence suggests that bagged fresh spinach may be a possible cause of this outbreak.

Based on the current information, FDA advises that consumers not eat bagged fresh spinach at this time. Individuals who believe they may have experienced symptoms of illness after consuming bagged spinach are urged to contact their health care provider.

......

E. coli O157:H7 causes diarrhea, often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly. The condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death. To date, 50 cases of illness have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including 8 cases of HUS and one death.

At this time, the investigation is ongoing and states that have reported illnesses to date include: Connecticut, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Wisconsin.

The investigation still continues. FDA will make a firm announcement about the results of the investigation. You can check this website or add this RSS to your reader for new announcements from FDA.

4th of July in the Downtown

4th of July in the downtown

This year I attended the "family barbeque" event in the downtown of the city I live in. It was part of the 4th of July celebration.

According to our department secretary, this barbeque event usually starts 4-5 days prior to 4th of July, and used to called as "rib burn off".

They closed a small section of a street for the event, and the food carts were located at one side of that street.

Other than barbeque, there were also some non-meat foods.

I will share more pictures from the event with you soon.

An Ice Cream Day in Cold Stone Creamery

An Ice Cream Day in Cold Stone CreameryFinally I tried the Cold Stone Creamery! It was a popular topic in my working place for some time now. Even though I like ice cream, I just did not have the time.

One of our group mates is also an ice cream lover. She is about to return her home country, and she asked whether we knew of any special ice cream store that we can visit before she left. The final decision to visit Cold Stone Creamery was reached in only 5 minutes, and the directions were ready in the next two.

Talking TurkeyYesterday I realized that I need to do some spring cleaning in my mailbox. I need to open space for new mails, and get rid of the garbage.

During the cleaning , I found this two years old mail. One of my friends sent it to me, and I must find it interesting to keep it. (or I was busy and simply said, ok, I will read it later, and then forgot)

It was one of those forward mails, someone read some interesting article and starts passing on to the others.

The article in the mail was about how the turkey got its name. I don't know I long it was in the forwarding process before it got caught by my mailbox.

It was written by Giancarlo Casale, PhD. Giancarlo Casale is currently an assistant professor at the Department of History at the University of Minnesota.
